Percentage of pupils achieving 5+ A*-C passes in schools (key stage 4)

There has been an overall increase in pupils achieving 5+ A*-C in South Tyneside of 22 percentage points during the nine year period between 1998 and 2007.  This follows the pattern in the North East region and nationally.  Since 2000 South Tyneside’s results have improved at a faster rate than the national average although we remain below the national average with 59.3% compared to 62%.  However, in 2006 three of the LEAs schools achieved a 5+ A*-C pass rate above the national average.

The LEA operates a system of setting challenging aspirational targets in order that the schools strive for the best possible performance.  In previous years school performance has risen at a faster rate than that achieved nationally. However in 2007, South Tyneside’s results improved by 3.8 percentage points compared with the national rate of 3.9 percentage points.
