Primary and Secondary School Attendance

Attendance within the secondary school sector has risen slightly since last year and now stands at 91.9%. Primary school absence stands at 95% attendance. Primary school attendance is above the England average, and is the second highest in South Tyneside. However, our secondary school attendance is the second lowest in Tyne and Wear, and just below the England average.

In order to promote the importance of attendance, and to encourage children, South Tyneside has promoted many new initiatives such as the “Attend to Achieve” Campaign, which rewarded primary school children with 100% achievement.

Other measures included:

• Improved management and more rigorous monitoring of attendance at school level including, better use of electronic registration systems to monitor attendance and identify emerging trends
• Additional support provided to schools via the use of Behaviour Improvement Programme funding
• Additional support to Primary schools via the Attend to Achieve Project
• The introduction of partnership agreements between the Education Welfare Service and schools
• The implementation of new measures contained in the Anti Social Behaviour Act 2003 including Penalty Notices for truancy.
