Teenage (Under 18) conception rate
The latest data for the rate of teenage pregnancies (under-18 conception rate) in South Tyneside shows we are still the best performing area in the North East with a 37.6% reduction since the 1998 baseline. The rate now stands at 40.5 per 1000 young women aged 15 – 17, compared to 64.9 in 1998. We have matched the England average rate of 40.4 per 1000, we are improving much faster than the Tyne and Wear average, and we are well on track to meet our 2010 target.
The National Teenage Pregnancy Unit highlighted the Local Strategy during 2006 as one of the top performing areas in the country with both a significant reduction and excellent services.
