Children & Young PeopleVersion 5, February 2008 Percentage 11 year olds achieving level 4 or above in English, Maths and Science. (Key Stage 2)There has been an overall increase in the percentage of 11 year olds achieving level 4 or above in English, Maths and Science in South Tyneside in the nine year period between 1998 and 2007. This follows the pattern in Tyne and Wear and nationally. From the previous year (2006), English results increased to 81%, they are 2% above the Tyne and Wear average and 4% above the national average. Since 1998 the percentage of 11 year olds in South Tyneside achieving level 4 or above in English has increased by 20 percentage points. Maths results in South Tyneside increased by 2% between 2006 and 2007 and are now 1% above the Tyne and Wear and National averages. In Tyne and Wear and nationally results have increased over the period and since 1998 there has been an overall increase of 18 percentage points in South Tyneside. In Science there has been an increase in the percentage of 11 year olds achieving a minimum of level 4 since 1998, of 21 percentage points. South Tyneside’s increased slightly in 2007 to 88%, however they remain in line with the Tyne and Wear and national averages. The remaining authorities within Tyne and Wear increased or maintained their averages, with the exception of Gateshead but they remain in line with the Tyne and Wear and national averages however Newcastle’s results remain below the Tyne and Wear and national averages.
