What is Consultation?

Consultation is the term used by the Council to describe how we communicate with local residents to gain their views on a variety of issues that affect the lives of people who live in the borough.

Consultation is really important for the Council because it helps us to provide services that are based on a good understanding of our local community's needs.

We want to make sure that everyone in South Tyneside feels included and involved and that they have the opportunity to influence council decisions.

Our objectives are to:

  • Increase the proportion of residents who believe the council asks for the views of local people
  • Increase the proportion of residents who believe the council listens to the views of local people
  • Increase the proportion of residents who believe the council keeps them informed about the services and benefits that it provides

The values and beliefs that underpin our approach to consultation are to make sure that the Council is able to:

  • Reach out and communicate with every member of the community
  • Increase public involvement in the council's decision-making processes
  • Build public confidence in the council
  • Promote and achieve best value
  • Develop and sustain community partnerships
