According to the latest data (September 2007), South Tyneside’s employment rate for over 50 year olds stands at 33.3%, which is just below the North East average (33.4%), and which is 5.1% points below the Great Britain average of 38.4%.

Between 2005 & 2007, the Great Britain over-50 employment rate improved by 1.0% point. South Tyneside saw a 4.5% point improvement moving from 28.8% to the current 33.3%. This equates to an extra 1,800 over 50’s in employment.

At 11.5% points, the improvement between 2000 and 2007 in South Tyneside’s over-50 employment rate has greatly outstripped the average improvement in the North East (6.4% points) and Great Britain (4.1% points).

This is the best performance of the five Tyne & Wear authorities. South Tyneside has narrowed the gap to the Great Britain average by 3.5% points: in 2000 the “gap” between the GB & ST rate was 8.6%. In 2007 it was 5.1%.

In all, an extra 5,100 persons over 50 are in employment (as of 2007), compared to 2000.
