Percentage of population served by a kerbside collection of recyclables BV91

In 2007-8 over 98% of the population of South Tyneside was served by a kerbside collection of recyclables collecting paper, glass and cans from the edge of properties or communal areas using 55 litre boxes.

The Council implemented the Kerb-it service for these materials in 2003. This was complimented in the spring of 2004 with the introduction of our green waste scheme, Kerb-it Green, which now covers in excess of 70% of total properties.

South Tyneside Council is committed to providing kerbside recycling services to all properties within the borough and is working with contractors and suppliers to look at different ways to collect recyclables from communal and high-rise properties.&

The Council is also looking at expanding the number of properties who will have access to green waste collection services. A wheeled bin and lockable frame system has been installed at three high-rise premises in Jarrow to provide the same materials for recycling to those at individual households. This system has been expanded to low-rise blocks in Laygate and Whiteleas with plans for expansion to the remaining high-rise properties and larger communal type developments. This programme will give 100% of the properties access to a convenient kerbside service.

Following a bag trial, 10,000 properties have recently commenced a co-mingled bin trial for the recovery of plastic bottles and cardboard.

Recycling through the two kerbside services continues to form the main recycling activities in South Tyneside.
