Number of kilograms of household waste collected per head

In 2005/6 South Tyneside reported a total of 495 kg of household waste collected per head, this is a reduction on the previous year of 6.25%.  In comparison with the other local authorities in Tyne and Wear, South Tyneside collects a greater number of kilograms of household waste per head than Newcastle, but less than the other three neighbouring authorities.

In 2006/7, the amount of household waste collected fell further to 477kg’s, a reduction of 3.8% and a greater proportion of it was recycled and composted that at any time previously.

Waste Hierarchy (largest first): Residual Landfill, Recovery, Recycling, Re-use, Reduction, Prevention.South Tyneside Council’s primary aim is to prevent waste from being landfilled, the Council will continue to work to drive waste higher up the ‘waste hierarchy’ from recycling and composting to prevention, reduction and reuse (see corresponding diagram).

Generally, by providing and promoting recovery services we can directly influence how waste is managed e.g. recycling and composting.

The factors that influence waste minimisation include access to information by consumers and competing demands and personal priorities for individuals.

The Council has a Waste Management Strategy indicating how we will work to meet the national waste agenda over the next 10 to 20 years.

We have a delivery plan for the performance indicator on household waste with key actions relating to the reduction and reuse of waste, including:

  • Promoting 'reduce, reuse and recycle' message
  • Encouraging 'home composting'
  • Campaigning to reduce 'junk mail'
  • promoting a 'real nappy campaign'.

Number of Likograms of household waste collected per head

Kilograms of household waste collected per head’, illustrates the amount of household waste that the Council manages each year for each person in the borough.  This is an important indicator to determine the level of waste produced in total and the success of any waste minimisation activities.  The indicator includes the following categories of waste:

  • Household waste recycled.
  • Household waste composted.
  • Household waste used to recover heat, power and other energy sources.
  • Household waste landfilled.
