Housing, Environment and TransportVersion 3, July 2007 Number of kilograms of household waste collected per headIn 2005/6 South Tyneside reported a total of 495 kg of household waste collected per head, this is a reduction on the previous year of 6.25%. In comparison with the other local authorities in Tyne and Wear, South Tyneside collects a greater number of kilograms of household waste per head than Newcastle, but less than the other three neighbouring authorities. In 2006/7, the amount of household waste collected fell further to 477kg’s, a reduction of 3.8% and a greater proportion of it was recycled and composted that at any time previously.
Generally, by providing and promoting recovery services we can directly influence how waste is managed e.g. recycling and composting. The factors that influence waste minimisation include access to information by consumers and competing demands and personal priorities for individuals. The Council has a Waste Management Strategy indicating how we will work to meet the national waste agenda over the next 10 to 20 years. We have a delivery plan for the performance indicator on household waste with key actions relating to the reduction and reuse of waste, including:
