Residents Perceptions of Safety After Dark

As part of South Tyneside’s MORI Residents Survey, residents were asked 'How safe do you feel walking alone in or around this area after dark?'

The results were compared to the 2004 survey that was carried out.

2004 % 2006 %
Very safe 22 22
Fairly safe 33 31
Fairly unsafe 26 27
Very unsafe 15 15
Don't know 2 4

Over 50% of the people in South Tyneside feel very safe or fairly safe after dark, whereas approximately 40% feel unsafe. Whilst Crime figures for South Tyneside have continued to show improvement, it appears that public perception of crime has not improved.

It should be noted that the Fear of Crime survey, which was commissioned in 2004 by the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, showed that approximately 58% of people surveyed said they felt unsafe when outside in South Tyneside after dark. It is important to note that the 2004 Fear of Crime Survey figures should not be directly compared to the preceding information because they are collected from two different types of survey.
