All crimes per 1,000 populationIn 2007/2008, South Tyneside reported a decrease in the rate of all British Crime Survey (BCS) crimes from 60 to 50.9 per 1000 population. This is below the Tyne and Wear average of 51.2 per 1000 population. North Tyneside has the lowest rate in Tyne and & Wear ( 37.9 per 1,000 population) followed by Gateshead (46.6). South Tyneside’s 2007/08 rate for all crimes represents an improvement of 33% since the baseline was set in 2003/2004. The reduction in the rate of all crimes is the result of the combined efforts of the Police, the Community and the Partners through the Local Strategic Partnership, and the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership. These figures (and other crime rate statistics) are reported to the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership Strategy Group to help prioritise police and partner resources.
