Residents Perceptions of Safety During the Day

As part of South Tyneside’s MORI Residents Survey, residents were asked 'How safe do you feel walking alone in or around this area during the day?'

The results were compared to the 2004 survey that was carried out.

2004 % 2006 %
Very safe 53 58
Fairly safe 41 36
Fairly unsafe 4 4
Very unsafe 1 1
Don't know 0.17 1

Over 90% of the people in South Tyneside feel very safe or fairly safe going outside during the day, with only 1% feeling very unsafe. Crime figures for South Tyneside have continued to show improvement: this is reflected in the fact that 5% more people feel very safe during the day.

This is consistent with the Fear of Crime survey, which was commissioned in 2004 by the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, which showed that approximately 90% of people surveyed felt safe when outside in South Shields during the day. It is important to note that the 2004 Fear of Crime Survey figures should not be directly compared to the preceding information because they are collected from two different types of survey.
