South Tyneside's cycling strategy
The Local Transport Plan for Tyne and Wear (2006-2011), addresses the Government’s priority aims for transport of reducing congestion, improving accessibility, improving road safety and improving air quality.
More people need to be encouraged to use cycling as an alternative to other modes of transport available to them if cycling is to play a more significant role in fulfilling these aims. South Tyneside Council has therefore produced a cycling strategy that sets out in detail the measures that will be adopted to realise our own objectives – it is considered that, in order to achieve this target, the following local objectives must be realised:
A reduction in accidents involving
cyclists |
The creation of a cycle route
network including links to the National Cycle Network and links to the cycle networks of neighbouring authorities |
Provision of cycle parking |
Promotion of cycling as a realistic, healthy and environmentally sustainable mode of travel |
Provision of cycle training |
Maintaining the facilities to a high standard |
