The SEN Code of Practice:

The SEN Code of Practice provides practical advice to LEA’s, schools and all those with statutory responsibilities under the 1996 Education Act, on their duties in special education. The code sets out guidance on policies and procedures aimed at enabling pupils with SEN to:

  • Reach their full potential.
  • For children under two, educational provision of any kind.
  • Be fully included in their school communities.
  • Make a successful transition to adulthood.

The fundamental principles under pinning the code of practice are:

  • A child with SEN should have their needs met.
  • The special educational needs of children will normally be met in mainstream schools or settings.
  • The views of the child should be sought and taken into account.
  • Parents have a vital role to play in supporting their Childs education.
  • Children with SEN should be offered full access to a broad, balanced and relevant education, including an appropriate curriculum for the foundation stage and the National Curriculum.

The involvement of parents, pupils and voluntary agencies is seen as essential to the identification of, assessment of, and provision for, children with SEN.

The code of practice gives guidance to those involved in special education, but it does not tell them what to do in every case. Professional staff involved in assessment and provision, are expected to use their judgment as to how best to support children with SEN.
