Schools in South Tyneside School Transport Pupils under the age of 8 years Where any pupil who attends their neighbourhood area school and lives more than two miles from the school, the LEA will meet the cost of travel to and from school.
Pupils between the ages of 8-16 years (up to the statutory school leaving date) Where any pupil who attends their catchment area school and lives more than three miles from the school the Local Authority will meet the cost of travel to and from school. Where pupils qualify for the above free travel the Local Authority will issue Nexus travel passes. Pupils attending Voluntary Aided schools will not be provided with free travel permits if the pupil’s attendance at the school is not as a result of denominational/faith reasons. The Government is planning to introduce new legislation to provide sustainable transport, and to provide free home-school transport for eligible children to any of the nearest three suitable secondary schools where these lie between two and six miles from their home (having regard to preference based on religion or belief).

Teen Travel Scheme - Post 16 students At present the Post 16 ticket scheme 'Teen Travel' is being revised by Nexus. Post 16 learners are advised to contact their nearest Nexus Travel shop for details of tickets and discounts for public transport. Details of all Nexus schemes can be found at www.nexus.org.uk.
