Cycling safety tips

  • Follow the Highway Code
  • Wear bright clothing and visibility aids
  • Use correct lighting when riding in the dark
  • Wear a cycle helmet
  • Ride in single file on cycle tracks and lanes and on narrow roads
  • Fit an audible warning device and use it
  • Keep your cycle well maintained
  • Don't ride on pavements
  • Don't cycle close behind any motor vehicles
  • Don't carry anything which could affect your balance or become tangled in your chain or wheels
  • Don't cycle under the influence of drink or drugs
  • Lock your bicycle
  • Carry basic tools such as bike spanner and puncture repair kit/spare tube
  • Carry an OS or A-to-Z with you
