Outdoor education
It is widely acknowledged that participation in outdoor pursuits helps to build young people's self-confidence and fosters teamwork.
The council holds a current adventurous activities licence and satisfies all of the health and safety requirements of the Adventurous Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) for outdoor education providers. An Outdoor Education Strategy for the borough is currently being developed by the unit and its partners.
The Outdoor Education Service works with schools across South Tyneside offering outdoor education opportunities both land and sea based. The team are located at Simonside Youth Centre and are also responsible for the Water Activities Centre at the seafront in South Shields.
In association with the Thurston Outdoor Education Centre the service has developed a policy, procedures and guidelines for undertaking educational visits file that has been recognised as an excellent comprehensive example for the policies and procedures surrounding out of centre visits and activities.
