Out of school hours learning / study support
The aim of out of school hours learning is to develop a flexible approach to learning, encouraging schools to work with others to promote achievement and realise the full potential of all our pupils.
The key objectives are to raise awareness of the benefits of study support, develop links with other agencies and providers to meet the needs of the full range of abilities. Targeting children with particular disadvantage, to ensure an inclusive programme in order to raise attainment and achievement.
The out of school hours learning officer is responsible for ensuring effective communication between schools and their partners and the provision of management information on the delivery of a programme as well as monitoring and evaluating the programme.
Funding for out of school hours learning is available through the Standards Fund – Study Support and New Opportunities Fund. This includes a new bid for summer schools.
Extended schools
Governing bodies of maintained schools have a new power to provide community facilities or services which will benefit pupils, their families or people living and working in the locality of the school concerned.
This is a major change – formerly governing bodies could only offer provision for the benefit of pupils.
The aim of the extended schools programme is to develop schools as the heart of their local community. An extended school is one that provides a range of services and activities beyond the schools day to help meet the needs of its pupils, their families and the wider community. It may provide learning and cultural experiences for all, offering help and support where it can be easily accessed. Services such as adult learning, childcare, parenting support and ICT access.
