Youth Matters Achievement Awards 2007

Recognising South Tyneside's Young People For Their Positive Actions and Achievements

On 6th November 2007, South Tyneside's Youth Service's successful Youth Matters Achievement Awards reached new heights with almost 180 young people from across the borough receiving recognition for the positive actions and achievements which they make in their everyday lives and efforts in the community.

This years awards were even more special as Neil McCaffery, Youth Support Services Officer lead a group of young people who themselves organised the whole event from scratch, as well as taking a major role in the presentation evening that was held at the Prestige Hotel, South Shields.

The event, which the Mayor Councillor Tracey Dixon and Lead Member for Children and Young People Councillor Jim Foreman attended and officially opened, was described by the Mayor as 'proving the point that our young people are outstanding.'

Councillor Foreman said that the annual event aimed to give young people the recognition they deserve. 'it is these young people that help create the kind of borough that we are so proud to call home. I am confident that the future of South Tyneside is in safe hands when events such as this showcase the excellent work they are doing day in day out for the community as a whole.

The Mayor and Councillor Foreman praised the organisations and staff who took the time to nominate young people for their awards and applauded the commitments and achievements of the staff and volunteers who support the many and varied youth related agencies in the borough.

The celebration event at the Prestige Hotel was supported by The CAVE Youth Initiative Centre, whose staff and volunteers set up and operated the technical equipment. The organising team dressed the room with balloons and bows, which gave the event a professional touch. All the members of the organising team were distinctive at the event as they all wore event shirts that made the team more organised and recognisable when called upon. As the event was attended by 200 guests this proved to be very beneficial!

The celebration event was very successful and enjoyed by all. Chris Perry and Rachel Robson who hosted the event also performed three songs on the night and received an excellent response from the audience. There were moments of laughter, joy and tears as Rachel and Chris read out the nominations that are captured in this evaluation. All the young people nominated received a certificate for their achievements.

The Youth Service is proud to organise and host this event and we thank all the nominators who took the time to nominate Young people for an award to recognise their positive actions and achievements gained in 2007.
