Youth Opportunity Fund & Youth Capital Fund
The government has announced that large amount of money will be made available to local councils to develop activities and facilities chosen by young people.
The money, which will give young people between the ages of 13-19 a chance to have their say in deciding 'things to do and places to go' in South Tyneside, has been split into two funds:
Youth Opportunity Fund (YOF)
The Youth Opportunity Fund is aimed at providing more activities for young people, particularly disadvantaged young people.
It will fund activities such as:
- Music
- Drama
- Trips
- Fun days
- Drop in activities
- Support groups
- Residentials
By 'disadvantaged' we mean young people aged 13-19 whom, for whatever reason, are unable to access places to go, things to do, or have someone to talk to.
Young people can be disadvantaged for a variety of reasons. It may be because of a disability, their ethnic origin, cultural background or sexuality. It may be that they're from an area of high deprivation which has fewer facilities for young people than other areas. They may be unemployed, or not involved in education, employment or training or could come from low income families.

The Panel
A panel of 12 young people will manage the funds and decide which projects to support. The main purpose of the funds will be to give young people an influence in the development of South Tyneside and improve their quality of life.
We will achieve this by providing more opportunities for young people to develop their confidence, knowledge, skills and abilities. The fund will also have an impact on:
- Increasing young people's involvement in decision-making
- Improving well being
- Reducing anti-social behaviour in South Tyneside

South Tyneside Council's Youth Service are the accountable body, and are responsible for the funding. South Tyneside Council provides regular updates and reports to Government Office North East and the Department for Children Schools and Families and the Youth Task Force.
Youth Capital Fund Plus
Youth Capital Fund Plus is a one-off addition to fund new or refurbished youth facilities in neighbourhoods with high levels of deprivation; crime and anti-social behaviour and which currently lack good quality youth provision. The funding has come from the Youth Taskforce and is part of the Youth Task Force Action Plan.
The YCF Plus will build on the principles of YOF and YCF to bring young people and the local community together in the design and delivery of youth facilities. Young people, parents and community members should be encouraged to volunteer in the delivery of activities. We need to consult with young people to see the times and days that they want these activities to take place, including Fridays and Saturdays.
