Making libraries better

If you’re a regular at Whitburn Library then Anne Wilkin’s face will be familiar to you – she’s served customers there for five years but she has worked for our libraries across the borough for over 40 years.
Anne said:
“I think it’s really important that we’re really listening to what residents tell us and are acting on these views.
We know that the image of our libraries needs to change to appeal to everyone, especially younger people. We’re working hard to make libraries more accessible and improve our book stocks.”
We love our libraries and here’s some of the things we’re doing to make them even better:
- introducing a new self-issue computer system to remove the need for queuing, so you can see catalogues, reserve items and much more
- investing over £1/2 million in facilities such as the new library at Hebburn
- encouraging existing and new customers to come along to the many events we hold
- creating 21st century ways for you to find out information – for example access to the Oxford English Dictionaries and Reference Works through our People’s Network or people’s home computers
- and continuing to listen to your views
