Black and Minority Ethnic Community Who we are? Some of the Black and minority ethnic communities living in South Tyneside include:
What we have to offer? As independent not for profit organisations run by, for and located within local communities, the sector brings distinctive value to community life in South Tyneside. In particular it enables individuals to contribute to public life and supports the development of active thriving communities by providing opportunities for voluntary and community action. The sector empowers users, promotes cultural and faith activities, advocates for community needs, helps alleviate poverty and improves the quality of life for many people living in South Tyneside. An effective partnership with the Council is an essential part of ensuring that the sector is able to develop its full potential as an important contributor to community life and as a strategic agent of those it seeks to represent. As part of the Council's Race Equality Scheme and Community Cohesion Plan we will review how the Council can play an effective role in supporting the work of the sector. This will include looking at ways to attract additional resources to strengthen and develop the sector's capacity. Who we are in touch with? In addition, the South Tyneside Race Equality Forum, which is resourced and administered by the Tyne and Wear Race Equality Council is attended by various representatives from the various local Black and minority ethnic community and voluntary groups and agencies working with these communities. The Forum meets every month to discuss issues relating to race equality in the borough. An inter-agency asylum seekers group also meets every two weeks to discuss various issues including education, finance and housing. Our role in the LSP We have an important role to play in raising race equality issues at the LSP. We also have an important contribution to make in terms of delivering the Inclusion aim of the Council's Spirit of South Tyneside. Key Contact: > Read more about Dr Shobha Srivastava
