Library Events For Catherine Cookson Centenary

South Tyneside's most famous daughter Catherine Cookson was born 100 years ago next month (20th June).

To mark this occasion, the Wednesday Heritage Club at South Shields Central Library is holding two special events.

Biographer and poet Kathleen Jones will be speaking about the real Catherine Cookson, drawing upon the research she carried out for her books Catherine Cookson: the Biography and Seeking Catherine Cookson's Da.

Kathleen, who lives in Cumbria, has a number of writing credits to her name, including several biographical works, one of which is A Passionate Sisterhood: the Sisters, Wives and Daughters of the Lake Poets.

She is a regular performer at literature festivals all over Britain and leads creative writing workshops for fiction, poetry and biography. Kathleen will be appearing at the Library Theatre, in Prince Georg Square, on Wednesday, 7th June, at 7.30pm.

The following Wednesday, 14th June, at 2pm, local speaker Angus MacDonald will present Catherine Cookson, a Local Lass. This will feature a set of slides showing places associated with Catherine Cookson, and will be a sort of then and now of South Tyneside scenes linked with the author and her books.

Both of these events are free of charge and refreshments will be provided at the evening performance. Tickets can be collected from the Information Desk at the Central Library, South Shields, or telephone 0191 427 1818 ext. 7863 for details.

There is also the chance to join library staff for a Catherine Cookson coffee morning on her actual birthday, Tuesday 20th June, between 10am and 12 noon. As well as refreshments, there will be displays of photographs, Cookson booklists and you can enter the Catherine Cookson Quiz.
