Help With Slashing Energy Bills

South Tyneside residents are being given the opportunity to cut their energy bills, as well as reduce their impact on the environment, thanks to a helping hand from the Borough Council.

The authority has officially launched its Renewable Energy at Home leaflet, packed full of handy tips and advice on how residents can minimise their carbon footprint.

It details the different renewable energy technologies that can be installed in homes, their potential cost and the grant assistance that is currently available.

The leaflet was launched at the Middlefields site - a testament to the council's green credentials, where the wind turbine can be seen towering over the thousands of residents visiting the popular Recycling Village.

Doing the honours was Councillor Michael Clare, Lead Member of Environment, Housing and Transport, who said: "The Renewable Energy at Home leaflet is full of just the kind of information that people who want to minimise their carbon footprint are looking for.

"It can guide them in the right direction when it comes to saving money on energy bills, as well as reducing energy use, which we are all being urged to do these days.

"Energy sources covered in the leaflet include wind turbines and solar power, wood-fuelled boiler systems, ground source heat pumps and heaters and stoves fed by wood pellets. There is also advice on the council's Warmer Homes Project and biomass, as well as useful contact details for other energy-advice providers.

"And additionally, people can find contacts for other forms of renewable energy such as combined heat and power and hydro power. It's such a useful little leaflet and I know that it's going to be of great interest to lots of people."

Renewable energy is generated from sources that will not run out, like sun, wind and water. It does not produce harmful emissions such as carbon dioxide, and can actually save energy and money.

The introduction of the leaflet is the latest in a series of initiatives which South Tyneside Council is undertaking to help the Borough do its bit to reduce its carbon footprint.

The leaflet is available at all libraries across the Borough, and also from the Reception Desk at Regulatory Services, Level 3, Town Hall and Civic Offices, Westoe Road, South Shields.
