Planning Permission and Applications Planning is the process of determining planning applications. We aim to secure the most efficient use of land while providing adequate amenities, a good environment and compliance with the agreed land-use policies for the area. As the Local Planning Authority for South Tyneside, the Council considers planning applications and decides whether or not to give permission. Where relevant, decisions are made in accordance with the approved Unitary Development Plan for South Tyneside, unless material planning considerations indicate otherwise. In making decisions on planning matters, the Council takes account
of the provisions of the Human Rights Act 1998. The Council also has
regard to its duty under Section 17 of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998
to exercise its planning functions with due regard to the exercise
of those functions on, and the need to do all that it reasonably can
to prevent, crime and disorder in its area.
