Port of Tyne
The Port improves, maintains and manages the Port on the River Tyne. The head office is based at Maritime House, South Shields.
Beach and Foreshore
The council is responsible for the management (including recruiting life guards) of the Foreshore including both Sandhaven and Littlehaven Beaches.
Boat launching ramp
The council operate a launching ramp on the River Tyne next to South Shields Sailing Club off Harbour Drive.
Lifebelts
The council maintain water safety equipment including lifebelts and throw-lines at a number of Foreshore and Riverside locations.

Water sports - licensing
Providers of certain adventure activities must undergo inspection of their safety management systems and become licensed.
