Youth Offending Service: Volunteering

Volunteer Opportunities at South Tyneside YOS

Become involved with the Youth Offending Service. We offer excellent training and supervision in a variety of rewarding roles.

Roles can include:

Appropriate Adult Scheme [ External Link PDF 148k ]

This will involve the volunteer going to the Police Station to attend young people who have been arrested by the Police. As part of their role they would ensure that the Young Person has been adequately looked after and understands the reason why they are being held in custody. The volunteer will be present during the interview and will be able to assist the Young Person should they have any difficulty in understanding the questions asked by the Police.

They would normally attend a one day training course and a period of “shadowing” a more experienced full time member of staff. Once a period of shadowing is over then the volunteer will be allowed to attend their own callouts.

Mentoring Scheme

The SandWriter Mentoring Project, established in the year 2000, is currently based within South Tyneside Youth Offending Service (YOS). This project takes people from the local community and trains them to work as volunteer mentors. Once trained, they are matched with a young person aged between 8 and 18 years old, who has offended, or is at risk of offending. Mentors are there to support their mentee by listening to them, helping them reach their specified goal, assisting them to find alternative ways to spend their time, rather than offending and be a positive role model for them.
